Mzanzi Music Ensemble

Mzansi Music Ensemble
Founded by the late Victor Ntoni, a composer, arranger and bassist, who established the Mzansi Sings Ensemble in 2005. The Mzansi Music Ensemble was launched in March 2015 and is a production of Gauteng Music Development. Gauteng Music Development is a non-profit organization which seeks to preserve South African culture and heritages through recording, transcribing, performing and archiving of SA indigenous music and Victor Ntoni in the latter years of his life wrote big band scores that were never performed in anticipation that one day such an ensemble will exist. Mzansi Music Ensemble has started performing the big band scores that scores that Ntoni left behind and the project also aims to research music from past composers, transcribe and perform this music for the benefit of the current and future generations, ranging from the traditional sounds of the various tribal groups (including dance) to the contemporary sounds from the 50’s right up to the current musical compositions.Majority of the senior band members were mentored by Ntoni and the main objective of the ensemble is to develop young upcoming musicians who are also being mentored by these senior members by transferring their musical skills and techniques to the young ones, ushering them to their bright musical futures. The Mzansi Music Ensemble compromises of 18 piece big band, with 11 singers, a narrator, and a conductor. In total, there are 30 members of the ensemble on stage. Since its conception in March 2015 the ensemble’s past performances repertoire already included compositions of Victor Ntoni, Barney Rachabane, and Mongezi Feza. As the Mzansi tours the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KZN before the end 2015, the tour repertoires include music of the composers of these regions.
