Skank and The Roots is a 5 piece reggae band from Uitenhage in Nelson Mandela Bay. The band is composed of Eric “Skank” Mooi on lead vocal, Desmond “Rebel” Dabula on Drums, Mkhangeli “MK” Matiwane on Bass, Deon Manell on guitar and Frank Barends on Keyboards. Skank and the Roots are known for pulling people off their chairs onto the dance floor. The band’s charismatic lead singer Eric “Skank” Mooi never fails to ignite the audience with his explosive stage presence. His distinct wailing voice tone is at times reminiscent of the legendary Burning Spear or Joseph Hill from Culture. Skank and the Roots have over the years developed their unique sound with a repertoire of original songs that have a distinctive South African flavour.The band’s most memorable show was when they performed in front of Nelson Mandela in 1993 at a packed stadium in Uitenhage. Seeing Madiba’s fist in the air as they played their Mandela tribute song “Red Spear” was an unforgettable moment. According to bassist Mkhangeli “MK” Matiwane, “each of their composition is original, carries strong emotions and a positive message. This is what Reggae is all about! A good skanking vibe that touches one’s soul.”Skank & the Roots have opened for International artists such as Jean Grae (US) and IQulah (Jamaica).
